You may want to define sports teams and clubs as classes, where the coach is the teacher, but there are no grades. This has three benefits:
• Coaches can easily monitor their players' grades to ensure they're meeting eligibility requirements. • Coaches and club teachers can post announcements on the calendar for practice schedules, games, competitions, etc. • The attendance clerk can much more easily excuse a whole team for a planned trip — e.g., the whole Boys Varsity Basketball team or Debate team for 6th and 7th periods next Friday.
On the screen, add the coaches if they are not already PE teachers. They need the "V" permission to view their player's grades, but not the "T" permission to give grades. On the screen, add your teams and clubs. Uncheck "A. Count attendance", "R. Show on report cards & count roll", and "T. Show on high school transcripts" since they are not regular classes. But check "O. Show online for students/parents" so coaches can post announcements and events on the calendar. Set the Credits to 0 (just in case a teacher does add some sort of grades, it won't count toward the GPA). On the screen, add your teams and clubs (using the courses you just defined). Leave the Period blank (otherwise it may cause problems with attendance). On the screen, add the students.
Coaches and club teachers login as teachers and have a gradebook, but they don't need to give any grades. On the screen, you can see the current grades and GPA's for all your students. On the screen, you may add announcements and events to the calendar. You may take roll if you wish. It will not appear on report cards or attendance reports.
Admins may check the grades of all athletes at once for eligibility requirements. First check the "Athlete" checkbox on the screen to identify which students participate in sports. (This checkbox is .) Then on the screen, list all Athletes who have a GPA below a certain amount or who have below a certain grade in any class. |
