Attendance Grades Index

You can generate attendance grades for students based on custom penalties for absences and tardies.

First go to the screen and click the "Grade" button (found on the "Roll Sheet", not the "Seat Chart"). This prompts you to define your grading rules:

•

Enter how many points students start with, such as 20 points.

•

Enter how many points are subtracted for each absence, like 2 points. You may select which specific attendance codes count, e.g. to penalize only unexcused absences.

•

Enter how many points are subtracted for each tardy, like 1 point.

•

You may set how many infractions to waive, e.g. so there's no penalty for the first two tardies.

•

Alternatively, instead of "Points", select "Adjust Percents" to subtract a percent from the final grade — e.g. to subtract 5% from the final grade for each absence.

•

Another alternative is to start everyone with 0 points, then subtract points from the total grade. It's the opposite of extra credit, so it can lower a grade, but not raise it.

•

Yet another alternative is to start everyone with 0 points, then add points for each time they're Present, so it's like extra credit. To do this, you must subtract negative points, e.g. "subtract -2 points".

•

Check "Apply to all classes" to use the same rules in each class.

When you click OK, it creates a new assignment named "Attendance" and fills in scores for each student. You may then make further adjustments to the Category and other assignment options.

Notes:

Attendance grades do NOT update automatically as you change or add more attendance. It is only a snapshot of the attendance at that time. To update the attendance grades, repeat the steps above, or select the assignment on the screen and click "Update Roll". Either way updates scores for the existing "Attendance" assignment.

You may manually change any student's attendance grade to make exceptions. But that will be overwritten if you later regenerate attendance grades.

It will update the attendance assignment only if it is still named "Attendance". If you change the name to something else, it will create a new assignment.

Attendance grades cover the whole grading period, so e.g. there should be only one "Attendance" assignment for the whole Quarter.

Attendance grades do not span multiple grading periods — e.g. the Attendance grade in your 2nd Quarter gradebook does not include 1st Quarter, so you must do this separately for each gradebook.

If your school uses Period attendance, it does include the student's attendance for the full term, even if they transferred from another teacher partway through. But for Class attendance it counts only the attendance you entered in your class. For Daily attendance it does not matter which course or class.
