Categories Index

On the screen teachers can define Categories for assignments, like Homework, Tests & Quizzes, Participation, etc. (System admins may define defaults on the screen.)

Categories may be different for each subject if you uncheck "Apply to all classes".

To grade things like reading fluency, vocabulary, spelling, specific math skills, behavior, etc., use the Standards feature instead of Categories.

Weighted lets you set each category to a specific portion of the grade, e.g., Homework as 25% of the grade. (Most teachers use weights out of 100, but it accepts relative weights out of any total.) A weight of zero means assignments in that category don't count toward the total grade.

Note: If a student has no scores yet in a Category, that category is ignored, and the other categories will appear to have more weight because they must expand to fill that gap. See Weights.

Note: With weighted categories, the assignment points in one category may be worth more or less than points in other categories, so they cannot be added together to show a total number of points.

Unweighted calculates the total grade simply by adding all the points of all the assignments, regardless of their categories.

Select None if you don't use categories.

Uncheck "Show on reports: Category grades" if you don't want students and parents to see the subtotal grade for each category.

Note: Categories are not available if your Standards-based grading option is set to Summative, and category weights apply to your gradebook but not report cards if it's set to Both.

The screen is where you set the Category menu for each assignment.

Troubleshooting

Categories in one class keep saving for other classes too

Uncheck "Apply to all classes/subjects".

Different sections of the same course/subject always use the same categories, even if you uncheck "Apply to all classes", so they can share assignments and transfer grades between sections. But it does let you set different weights in each class.

Categories in one grading period keep saving for other grading periods too

Uncheck "Apply to all Semester" (or whatever your cumulative term is called).
